Haunted Central Raises $18,000 in its Final Year

In its fourth and final year, Haunted Central opened its doors on October 27th and 28th to raise money for the District 113A Educational Foundation and the Hope & Friendship Foundation in Lemont. And, like past years, the ghouls did not disappoint! The haunted house raised over $18,000 in ticket sale profits and hosted over 2,000 guests, breaking records for all previous years of the event. Proceeds will fund innovative educational programs at District 113A and help local families in need.

“This was our most successful year in the four years we’ve been hosting the event,” said Carolyn Cesarz, President District 113A Educational Foundation. “We especially want to thank CITGO our Diamond Level sponsor, and the many local businesses and volunteers for their generous giving and overwhelming support.”

Transforming Central School, which has been shuttered since 2012, into a haunted house is no simple task. With over 200 volunteers, it is truly a collaborative community event. Cindy Kelly, School District 113A Board of Education member and the event organizer for the past four years, said, “We are so grateful to the hundreds of volunteers who made this event a success. They outdid themselves this year!” Volunteers included SD113A staff, numerous local businesses, Lemont High School, the Lemont Fire Protection District, Lemont Police Department and members from across the community.

Haunted Central offered evening tours through the haunted halls of Central School and a family-friendly daytime event for the more timid. Over its four-year run, it has raised over $66,000 and hosted over 8,000 visitors. Dr. Courtney Orzel, District 113A Superintendent, greeted each visitor at the doors of Haunted Central. “It’s been a fun four years! We look forward to supporting future fundraisers hosted by the Educational Foundation to benefit the students of District 113A,” said Orzel.

The Educational Foundation will use proceeds from Haunted Central, along with donations from individuals and local businesses, to fund innovative and creative teaching methods and programs through grant awards to D113A teachers. Grants will be awarded in the spring.

Bootleg Bash Raises $12,000 for Lemont Students!

Ruffled Feathers Golf Club transformed to a 1920s speakeasy Saturday night for the SD 113A Educational Foundation’s Bootleg Bash. By the end of evening, the group raised $12,000 to fund enrichment materials and programs for the schools.

“Foundation trustees and the event committee outdid themselves creating a spectacular experience for our guests.” said Foundation President Shelley Taylor. “We had a great mix of district families, community members, district staff, Board of Education members and business sponsors in attendance.”

Business sponsors of the event included Citgo, Champions, IMTT, 3 Corners Grill & Tap, MB Financial Bank and Forzley Eye Care. Many more businesses donated raffle and silent auction prizes.

The profits for this event will fund grants to be awarded to district teachers in the spring. Disrict staff are invited to submit applications through April 15. Awarded grants will be implemented during the 2015-2016 school year. Past grants have funded science equipment, iPads, software licenses, math games and reading enrichment materials across all grades in the district. To see a complete list of past grants, visit the Foundation website.

The SD 113A Educational Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) public charity. The goal of the Foundation is to provide educational materials and programs beyond the operating budget of the school district to promote a rich learning environment. Since 2010 the group has awarded more than $120,000 in grants.

Haunted Central 2014 Raises More Than $15,000!

Haunted Central was a huge success, and the Foundation is grateful to the SD 113A Board of Education and Administration for organizing the event. The more than $15,000 raised will benefit the Foundation and Hope and Friendship Foundation. The event attracted 2,500 brave souls who enjoyed  a spooky tour of Haunted  Central. Thanks to more than 200 volunteers, this was truly a community success!
